  • Caxton Jack

    Well, since Nellie is a bit busy and not all of you subscribe to her blog I think I can safely announce a bit of information here...

    Caxton Jack was born last night around 1:00 a.m.  He weighs 9 lb. 12 oz. and measures 21 inches!  It was a rough birth but Nellie and Caxton seem to be fine.  We're going up to see them tomorrow so I'll try to post pictures soon after that.  If you would like to congratulate Nellie you can find her blog here.

  • Hymn 444

    I looked up Hymn 444 to print off and put above my kitchen sink and discovered there are 4 extra verses that aren't in our hymn book!  There is so much to think about in this hymn.  Very convicting.

    Father, I Know That All My Life

     "My times are in Thy hand." -- Psalm XXXI.15

    Father, I know that all my life
    Is portioned out for me,
    And the changes that are sure to come,
    I do not fear to see;
    But I ask Thee for a present mind
    Intent on pleasing Thee.

    I ask Thee for a thoughtful love,
    Through constant watching wise,
    To meet the glad with joyful smiles,
    And to wipe the weeping eyes;
    And a heart at leisure from itself,
    To soothe and sympathise.

    I would not have the restless will
    That hurries to and fro,
    Seeking for some great thing to do
    Or secret thing to know;
    I would be treated as a child,
    And guided where I go.

    Wherever in the world I am,
    In whatsoe'er estate,
    I have a fellowship with hearts
    To keep and cultivate;
    And a work of lowly love to do
    For the Lord on whom I wait.

    So I ask Thee for the daily strength,
    To none that ask denied,
    And a mind to blend with outward life
    While keeping at Thy side;
    Content to fill a little space,
    If Thou be glorified.

    And if some things I do not ask,
    In my cup of blessing be,
    I would have my spirit filled the more
    With grateful love to Thee --
    More careful -- not to serve Thee much,
    But to please Thee perfectly.

    There are briers besetting every path,
    That call for patient care;
    There is a cross in every lot,
    And an earnest need for prayer;
    But a lowly heart that leans on Thee
    Is happy anywhere.

    In a service which Thy will appoints,
    There are no bonds for me,
    For my inmost heart is taught "the truth"
    That makes Thy children "free;"
    And a life of self-renouncing love
    Is a life of liberty.

  • Gymnastics

    James was in his element last night.  We took him to his first gymnastics class and I don't think he stopped smiling the whole time!  I don't think he could get over the fact that someone was actually teaching him to do a hand-stand and jump off of a vault onto a huge pad, etc.  I thought it would help him direct his acrobatics so he wouldn't do it so much at home but I was completely wrong.  The stunts only increased when we got home.  Oh well.  At least he has an avenue to direct all that energy.  He did really well.  It's was a small class of only 4 boys so they got plenty of one-on-one but he was also able to watch the boys that had been there longer.  We'll start taking him on Thursdays right after piano lessons so it works out really well.  Every time we go it will be another reminder for me to keep going with homeschooling (which is challenging) so that we can afford to get him other lessons like this.  I'm excited for him to be under the instruction of someone besides me, especially men (his gym. teacher and piano teacher are both men), which I think is really good for boys.  Piano starts Thursday, which I'm also excited about.  Along with regular piano and theory his teacher teaches jazz improv. which James would love.  Michael Buble is his favorite!  He also really took off with reading all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago which is a huge load off of my mind.  It just suddenly clicked.  Hopefully that will make this school year easier.  It's exciting to see my son grow and change.  I have much for which to thank the Lord!
